Not every area is conducive to growing plants or flowers outdoors year round. Commercial greenhouses, or a small one erected in your backyard, can use LED grow lights for flowers and plants to help grow them anytime of the year.  

Greenhouses have begun to use LED grow lights for their plants. The LED lights provide intense light to indoor areas, mimicking the sun's rays. The lights may be used on seedlings before transplanting outside in the Spring.  

The best light for plants, vegetables and flowers is sunlight, but you can't always provide it to plants when you live in a cold climate six months out of the year. A greenhouse in the northern region has to provide artificial lighting that best mimics the sun's rays. LED grow lights have become the new type of light that greenhouses use to grow plants. Before, greenhouses used HID lighting, which provided intense light like the sun, but also used up a large amount of energy. As we continue to find ways to conserve energy, the LED grow lights were introduced as an alternative to HID lighting. The LED lights use less energy but still provide the type of lighting needed for plants to grow.  

Other benefits to using LED lights instead of HID include the noise factor. If you have ever entered a greenhouse and heard a large roaring type of noise, this was caused from the ballasts of HID lighting. LED lights are quiet and eliminate any kind of noise. The life of LED lights are also longer than HID, eliminating the need to replace them often.  

While there are many benefits to using LED grow lights, you should not stare at the light for long periods as it could result in damage to the eyes, the same as staring at the sun. You should also read the instructions thoroughly on the LED grow lights to know exactly how to place them for the most benefit to the plants. Placing the bulbs too close to certain plants could result in burning and destroying them. Several bulbs are usually placed in one bar to hang over a section of plants. The bulbs may come in different strengths just like ordinary light bulbs for the home. You will need to find out what strength of bulb is required for each plant. One plant may be able to handle a stronger LED bulb while another may need less.

Most plants also require heat to grow, and LED grow lights will not produce enough heat for them. You may need to place heaters inside the greenhouse along with the LED lights in order for plants to grow effectively. Heaters with blowers to distribute the heat should work for most greenhouses. For people who are interested in other ways of helping their environment by using clean energy, you may want to look into solar and wind energy. Harnessing wind energy can help power heaters and lights in the greenhouse. Solar energy may be used when you don't need the full force of the heaters, depending on the outside temperature.  

Look for LED grow lights at lighting stores or home improvement outlets. Talk to the salesperson about how the lights work and the best strength for the type of greenhouse or other structure you want to use them in. Salespeople at lighting stores can guide you through all the components needed to get the lights up and working correctly. You may want to have assistance, or have the lights installed in your greenhouse by a professional to ensure everything is wired correctly. Ask the lighting store about installation or who you can hire to do it for you.
